This goes out to those people who did not stand up when the Philippine national anthem was played in SM City Cebu, Cinema 2 last May 2, 2009:
Don't you understand? Don't you get it? It's not about being cool.
It's about respecting the nation that so many Filipinos have fought and sacrificed for. The freedom you have in this country is the result of the collective efforts of your countrymen who -- in big and small ways -- have made sure you will have a better life than they ever had.
You are all probably employed. Well the reason you still have paychecks is because of the thousands of overseas Filipino workers who work their asses off just to send in the dollars. They work day in and day out in foreign countries, far from their families. They are missing out on all the birthdays, graduations, and weddings of their loved ones. All these men and women are literally carrying the weight of our nation's economy on their shoulders. And you are enjoying all the perks that brings. But that shouldn't matter right? It's uncool and embarrassing.
Let's not even talk about the Rizals and the Bonifacios and the Silangs. You probably think they are all uncool too. Nevermind the fact that because of their courage and bravery, you have a country you can call your own. You probably have houses or are renting apartments. Well, guess what: The land you live on have been purchased by the those who fought revolutions against those who wanted to colonize you. But that shouldn't matter right? It's uncool and too passe.
Just wondering, are you Christians? Don't you know that in China, you can go to jail if you even pray in public? In some parts of Africa, you can get tortured if you worship publicly. In the Philippines, you can worship God and no one will so much as lift a finger against you. Is that still uncool?
Oh yeah, Pacquiao. Not cool enough?
Now, that's cool.
STAND UP WHEN THE ANTHEM IS PLAYING, PEOPLE!!!!! JUST STAND UP!!!! THAT'S ALL.
